
The Giant and the Dwarf is a story about a brother and his sister who has dwarfism.
The dwarf sister is looked at like she is some freak. People stare at her and children point. The dwarf sister has to learn to ignore this, but it does not take away how hurtful it is! Her parents even looked at her with disgust. She was tired of people making her size their business, taking measurements and giving her unnecessary injections. As she grows older, it gets harder for her to maneuver around. Her teacher says she will have to stop going on their school trips.
Her brother, the "giant", is always there to help his sister. He has learned to stare back at people, in order to make them feel as uncomfortable as they make him and his sister feel. Instead of letting his sister miss out on the school trips, he decided to carry him on his shoulders. That way she will be able have a better view than the other kids. People will also be looking up at her in awe, instead of looking down on her with disgust.
As the years went by, it became easier to carry his sister. One thing he noticed, it was getting harder to get her off his shoulders. One day he could not get her off. Everyone he asked about getting his sister of his shoulders would tell him no one was there. Years later he encountered an old man who could see his sister. He told him he needed to understand what his sister felt in order to get her off his shoulders.
